Foundation & Heuristic Research

Conducted usability testing on the beta version with participants representing travellers, 18–40 age group, and business users. Used a combination of observation, video/audio recordings, and post-test questionnaires. Applied Nielsen's 10 usability heuristics to identify critical friction points across all translation flows.

Analysed 10+ competing translation apps including Google Translate (500M+ daily users, 100+ languages), Microsoft Translate (real-time conversation), iTranslate (Apple Best App), Papago, Yandex, Baidu, Reverso, Babbel, Duolingo, TripLingo, and SayHi — to position JioTranslate and identify feature gaps.

03 — V1 Evaluative Research

Post-Launch Evaluation & CX Alignment

Who we designed for.

Research participants spanned travellers, professionals who had relocated cities, students, and business users. A primary persona was synthesised from the highest-frequency pain patterns.

Key Research Insights

What users told us — and what we found.

6 high-priority insights emerged from beta usability testing and were tracked across V1 and V2 to verify resolution. Each insight directly informed a product or design decision.

Language coverage too limited for Indian users

JioTranslate launched with only 3 global + 9 Indian languages. Users, especially those from North-East and South India, expected significantly broader regional coverage — particularly for dialects not covered by global competitors.

Real-time translation required — extra tap breaks flow

Users expected instant translation as they typed, similar to Google Translate. The current two-step flow (type → tap to translate) introduced unnecessary friction, especially in conversation scenarios.

Text cleared on language switch — major usability failure

When users switched between source and target languages, all entered text was erased — forcing re-entry. This was a critical usability failure that directly violated the heuristic of user control and freedom.

Regional dialect nuances frequently missed

Translations often overlooked nuanced differences across regional language variations — resulting in inaccuracies that felt culturally tone-deaf. Particularly problematic for Hindi-Hindustani, Tamil regional dialects, and Bengali.

Chat translation state invisible to users

Users couldn't tell whether chat messages were being translated — the app continued showing content in the original language without visible state changes. This created uncertainty and undermined trust in the feature.

Voice recognition degraded by background noise

Background noise and accents significantly compromised voice translation accuracy. Users in public spaces (metro, cafes, offices) could not rely on the voice feature. Noise cancellation was the top-requested improvement.
